VOLUNTEER

WomanVolunteers are an integral part of all our services and programs at Voices of Positive Women.

A number of volunteer positions, such as participation on our Board of Directors, and in the Peer Mentor Program, are reserved for our members (HIV positive women across Ontario). Members living outside the GTA can volunteer by getting involved in one of our committees which meet by teleconference, or by applying to become a Peer Mentor in their communities.

Most other volunteer positions are open to all women, regardless of HIV status. Volunteers assist staff in our office, participate in committees, plan special events and fundraisers, work on our website or our newsletter, do community outreach, act as receptionists and much more!

A mandatory training for all new volunteers/members who work in our office is held twice a year: in the Spring and the Fall. Additional trainings for active volunteers on topics such as HIV, Women & Prisons, Aboriginal Women and HIV, Trans Issues 101, and Harm Reduction are held throughout the year. We ask that volunteers make a six month minimum commitment to Voices of Positive Women.

student placements

Each year Voices accepts one or two students doing their practicum placements from colleges and universities in social service/feminist/community related programs. We accept students for fall placements and for spring/summer block placements. Students seeking placement opportunities for these sessions are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Coordinator as early as possible, as we normally hold interviews in July for the fall session and in February/March for the spring/summer session.

Placements at Voices are ideal for self-motivated, mature students with a commitment to anti-oppression practice, looking for experience in community organizing. Please note that we do not offer students the opportunity to do case work, counseling or formal support work.

I have been able to acquire new skills and share those I have with others. Contributing to the development and programming of "Voices of Positive Women" has helped me to maintain a high degree of self-worth and accomplishment something not always easy to do when you live with HIV.
