ELIZABETH FRY SOCIETIES (Ontario)
|
What is the Elizabeth Fry Society? |
|
Elizabeth Fry Societies provide a
network of programs and services designed to meet the needs of women
offenders. Professional staff and volunteers, governed by volunteer
community Boards of Directors, provide direct services, including
counseling, programs, financial assistance, accommodation, court
assistance, and emotional support, from the time a woman is arrested
through to her discharge from prison and return to her community.
In addition to the provision of such direct services to women in
conflict with the law, the various societies, through their Boards of
Directors, volunteers and staff, monitor those changes in the law and in
government policies which have an impact on the status of women.
The Council of Elizabeth Fry
Societies of Ontario (CEFSO) acts as the provincial voice for Elizabeth
Fry Societies located in Ontario, and as the regional advocate for
federally-sentenced women. The Council of Elizabeth Fry Societies
of Ontario (CEFSO) is the regional voice in Ontario for women who are or
have been in conflict with the law, or are at risk of conflict with the
law. The purpose of the Council is to act on matters concerning women
who are or have been in conflict with the law, or are at risk of
conflict with the law, and to provide member agency support. The
Council promotes the following principles:
1. There must be fair and equitable treatment of women who are or have
been in conflict with the law, or are at risk of conflict with the law
2. The community has a responsibility to be active in the criminal
justice system
3. The role of voluntary and non-governmental organizations is vital to
the effective realization of this mission.
