North Shore Tribal Council:

Mamaweswen - Health Access Centres

The North Shore Tribal Council is a community comprised of seven First Nations stretching from Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie: Whitefish Lake, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Serpent River, Mississauga, Thessalon, Garden River and Batchewana.

In the late 1980s, the federal government began to devolve responsibility for programs including health care, to First Nation tribal councils. The first challenge the North Shore Tribal Council faced was its own diversity and geography. The Council's members include several linguistic sub-groups, and Ojibway migrations over the past 200 to 300 years have scattered them as far as Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Ohio. More than 400 kilometres divide the council members in the east from those in the west and they each have varying resources and services available to them based on their location.

To bring these diverse nations together with other communities and organizations, the council created the Mamaweswen Health Program. Mamaweswen collaborates with the Union of Ontario Indians, the Lung Association, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Ontario Women's Directorate, the Sault Ste. Marie Friendship Centre, the regional child welfare agency, community health nurses, and a host of other communities and organizations.

Since the Mamaweswen Health Program was founded, the community has made significant gains in fostering "community wellness." They have increased access to traditional healing practices and medicines and to traditional spiritual and cultural practices which strengthen individuals and their community. Also developed by the Council was the Long Term Care Program that provides home support services and meals on wheels to community members, as well as the community initiated suicide intervention and prevention crisis response teams.
